What's Next for Sincerely, Celisia 🚀 (Issue #107)
A few updates coming to a newsletter near you! ✨ Plus, my latest comfort binge, the sheet-pan fried rice I’m dying to try, and lots more!
Hi friends,
Starting this summer, I’m switching things up a bit here at Sincerely, Celisia. Between producing Truer Crime Season 3 and trying not to completely lose my mind, I’m reimagining this newsletter to work with my life, not against it.
After reading through your survey feedback (thank you, by the way!), it was clear that many of you love the recommendations, the links, and the little windows into what I’m thinking about—and that not every week needs to be a long essay. So here’s the plan: You’ll still get something from me every week. But instead of a full essay every time, I’ll now send out one big essay issue a month—something thoughtful, juicy, and a little more personal.
The rest of the time? You’ll still get quick-hit recommendations: the books I can’t shut up about, the links I bookmarked at 1 a.m., the podcast episodes that rearranged my brain. Basically, all the good stuff I’d be texting my group chat anyway.
It’s the same weekly ritual, with a little breathing room built in.
If you’re a paid subscriber, don’t worry — P.S. isn’t going anywhere. That monthly bonus issue will keep coming as usual, with all the same recs, links, and little life updates you’ve come to expect. ✨
As always, thank you for being on this journey with me!! 🫶🏽
A round-up of things to watch, read, and listen to as you head into the weekend.
I know how frustrating paywalls are! When possible, I’ll try to offer gift links through my subscriptions to support access to high-quality journalism.
The Atlantic: The Gen Z Lifestyle Subsidy by Lila Shroff
During the early 2010s, startups like Uber, DoorDash, and Class Pass strategically grew their businesses by offering their services at historically low prices. Now, Gen Z is experiencing something similar with AI, and this article explores how it is shaping the generation.
Netflix: The Four Seasons
Starring Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Coleman Domingo, Four Seasons follows a group of married couples whose quarterly weekend trips together are put to the test in the wake of a divorce. It’s funny, thoughtful, deeply relatable, and the acting is superb! I was watching it obsessively last week, and I am crossing all my fingers and toes for a season 2!
The Washington Post: Why do romance covers all look like this now? (gift link) by Sophia Nguyen
Lately, it feels like every romance book cover is cut from the same cloth: bold colors, quirky figures, and a look that’s instantly recognizable (and maybe a little overdone). This article dives into how we got here and what the rise of this now-signature style says about the cycle of book cover trends.
Action items to support and care for the world around us.
With ICE raids happening across the country and protests underway in LA, I wanted to share a few ways to take action in your community.
First up: This helpful slideshow from @operationhealthyhearts breaks down how to show up for undocumented folks through mutual aid. It’s a great place to start:
If you’re looking for something more in-depth, the Los Angeles Public Press put together a detailed guide on how to stand with immigrants, from trusted orgs accepting donations and elected officials to contact, to reporting ICE encounters and building mutual aid networks where you live. Check it out here.
Things to try + share in the group chat.
This conversation between Jordan Peele and Ryan Coogler is *phenomenal*!! The two discuss all things horror, including the limits (and possibilities) of the genre and what it takes to pull it off on screen. Highly recommend!
This recipe for sheet pan fried rice was developed by someone who used to work at Benihana – so… I’m sold? Clearly, I’m an easy sell, but tbh I’m not mad about it.
If you’re in Minnesota, make sure to check out the Jook Sing pop-up at Bar Brava this summer! I actually went to high school with one of the chefs, so I’m extra excited to give it a try!
Last week, I shared some articles about the unrestricted proliferation of A.I. (cue the existential dread), an *excellent* book I just finished reading, and a new show I’ve been binge-watching this week. Check it out:
Have a great weekend!
