Hi friends!
Please join me in welcoming a very special guest to the Sincerely, Celisia newsletter universe — Sidney Evans!! Sidney is a former Truer Crime editor, and from the very beginning I was so impressed with his creative ear and collaborative energy. And listen, Sidney is talented y’all!! He edits, he produces, and he even hosts his own podcast, Beyond the Threshold.
I asked him to share some recommendations with you all, and he really came through! My personal fave is his movie soundtracks playlist 👀, but there’s definitely a little something for everyone. <3
I’m not really sure how to set things off but if you are reading this, then I appreciate you being here. Celisia and I go back a few years from our time working at Tenderfoot TV, so I was excited when she reached out to me about doing this takeover.
My interests are audio production, sports, podcasts, documentaries, etc. I am an audio editor/producer and host of the podcast, Beyond the Threshold, highlighting Black men and women in the audio industry.
I consider myself someone who appreciates all that goes into great storytelling. But I really just wanted to continue the theme of nostalgia, which was Celisia’s initial inspiration for this newsletter. When nostalgia hits me, it hits strongly, so a lot of my suggestions will come from that perspective.
Most of what I shared connects to moments in my life that I wish I could experience for the first time again. Hopefully, it will do the same for you.
A round-up of things to watch, read, and listen to as you head into the weekend.
Podcast: The Soundtrack Show
The host highlights and breaks down the musical elements from film and television. It’s been giving me my nostalgia fix. My favorite episodes were on Home Alone and Back to the Future.
HBO Max: Luther: Never Too Much
This documentary explores the life and career of music icon Luther Vandross. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of voices of people who he impacted. I was surprised by the amount of archival footage throughout all the stages of his career. I saw this at the Cary Film Festival and the theatre had a strong reaction to the quality of the doc.
This show is a sitcom starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. It’s a great show to watch if you just want to laugh and relax. The father/son combo in real life makes the comedy that much better. And the kids in the show are hilarious.
Check out Sidney’s favorite songs featured in movies!
Things to try + share in the group chat.
Earn Your Leisure - Breaks down the world of business, finance, and entrepreneurship in a practical and relatable way. This is definitely the podcast I binge the most.
How Music Got Free - A deep dive into the transition from CDs to digital music in the late 90s and early 2000s. There’s a ton of stuff I learned that I didn’t know, including a scandal involving a CD-pressing plant that turned into a federal investigation.
Space Jam Soundtrack - At the end of my podcast, a recent guest listed Space Jam as one of his favorite movie soundtracks. Instant nostalgia. I had to go back and listen to it. You probably should, too.
Sincerely,
Sidney
Last Friday, I reflected on 10 years since my now-husband Andrew and I started dating (including our nerdy origin story). Check it out here:
Aaaaaand on Monday, I shared my monthly bonus issue, which included reflections on 5 Years Since Lockdown, how to start journaling and (actually) stick to it, + all my recent obsessions! ⬇️
Have a great weekend!
