Heyyyyyyy! Loved this entire post, Celisia! Such good info and, as always, your critical analysis and candor are a killer combo.
I've heard a lot about the pipeline, and found this post by Climate Defiance via Earthly Education helpful in understanding how Walz did eventually listen to activists, learn, and change his stance. It's still messy, of course, but so far I am appreciating the way this ticket seems capable of listening to people and adjusting (ex. Kamala in Detroit on Tuesday vs. Friday in Arizona, etc).
And also, it was quite cute that when I said "I think it might be down to Kelly, Shapiro, and Beshear" I had SO MANY Minnesotans being like "HEY WHAT ABOUT TIM!" I had long admired him (his defense of transgender rights was a huge deal for me + my family) but at that point I just never in a million years pictured her teaming up with him. Like it hadn't even occurred to me?! But yeah, I think it was a smart move for so many reasons --- at least based on the people who appeared to be in the running for this (I'm sure we can both list 100 other folks we'd rather see as VP but, alas). Cheers!
Thanks so much for reading and commenting! I actually read that thread after you shared it on your instagram stories -- definitely interesting and highlights the necessity of political organizing and the importance of pushing candidates to be better rather than glorifying them. While I commend the progressive climate policies Walz has proposed, ultimately the pipeline still happened. He's not walking it back and not explicitly saying he's regretful of his decision. For me, even if the climate impact of the pipeline is addressed by a shift towards better climate policies, the impact the pipeline has on indigenous communities is meaningful and remains unaddressed by Walz. (especially given all pipelines spill) and the treaty violation still happened. That said, every politician is going to do certain things we don't all stand by, and I'm hopeful that Walz will bring a nuanced and receptive perspective to these issues, especially given his non-traditional background. Also love all the Minnesotans in your DM's going hard for Walz! 🤣 I **loved** watching your stories during the veepstakes and keeping up with all the candidates and their backgrounds. You did such a great job sharing education in a fun an accessible way! ❤️
