Truer Crime is BACK! (Issue #110)
New episodes coming soon, PLUS the small decorating hack that has transformed my living spaces.
Hi friends!
The last few months I’ve alluded to being busy, and now I finally get to tell you what has been consuming so much of my time!
*drumroll please*
Truer Crime Season 3 is coming THIS August!
And this time, we’re doing things differently. Each month, we’ll spend multiple episodes digging into one case, with deeper stories, bigger arcs, and the kind of nuance and context you’ve told us you love.
After years of on-and-off releases, we’re finally bringing you a season built for consistency with new episodes most weeks for Six. Months. Straight. Eeeee!!!!
We’re still a month out, but this week I dropped a quick update in the podcast feed that breaks down everything that’s changing and what you can expect.
Check it out on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or by searching Truer Crime wherever you get your podcasts!
I can’t wait to share this next chapter with you!
A round-up of things to watch, read, and listen to as you head into the weekend.
I know how frustrating paywalls are! When possible, I’ll try to offer gift links through my subscriptions to support access to high-quality journalism.
The Guardian: ‘It’s so boring’: gen Z parents don’t like reading to their kids – and educators are worried by Alaina Demopoulos
In 2012, 64% of parents with kids under five reported reading to their kids. Since then, that number has dropped to just 41%! This article explores the impacts of that shift, and since reading it, Andrew and I have been spreading the reminder to all our friends: “Ya gotta read to the kids!!”
Modern Love Podcast: Friends for 16 Years. Lovers for One Night. (gift link)
I’m not a regular listener of Modern Love, but I stumbled upon this episode and really enjoyed it. It’s adapted from an essay by Elizabeth Laura Nelson, which tells the story of her and her best friend Jeff’s trajectory from best friends to lovers. The only catch? They didn’t get together until shortly before Jeff died. It’s a really beautiful and heartbreaking story of love, time, and the tension that always exists between the two.
The Guardian: The Truth About Salt: How to Avoid One of the World’s Biggest Hidden Killers by Rachel Dixon
A few weeks ago I ended up in the ER with my first-ever kidney stone. 🙃 Since then, Andrew’s been heckling me to join him on his low-sodium journey and honestly, this article he sent might be the peer pressure I need.
Action items to support and care for the world around us.
This issue will be released on the 4th of July, so I thought it would be a good time to direct attention and support to an organization doing great work towards preserving often under-told American history – The National Museum of African American History and Culture! I’ve been twice and it’s hands down my favorite museum ever. And I’m not a museum-girlie so that’s saying something!! In addition to their incredible in-person exhibits they offer a range of great learning materials and resources on their website. Check them out and donate to support their work here.
Things to try + share in the group chat.

My mom has been a long-time fan of cat tents, but the one she has is huge! I went looking for something a little more understated, and landed on *this one. It’s small, stores super compactly, and requires no additional assembly. Andrew and I like to put the boys in there when we’re grilling and chilling and in those moments I honestly feel like I’ve peaked! I don’t think life gets better than this?! 🤷🏾♀️
If you’re in Minnesota, check out The Farmer’s Cellar! Listen, I haven’t been yet, but this reel promises a speakeasy hidden inside of a gas station. Soo…what’s not to love??
I’ve been gradually making some (inexpensive) home upgrades, and *these linen curtains are of one my faves. They let some light in and really soften the feeling of the space without costing an arm and a leg! Win-win!
In last Friday’s essay, I shared some thoughts on identity, politics, and what we lose when the work of self-reflection is under attack. Check it out!
Have a great weekend!
